Liberal arts — artes liberales — has meant, since ancient Rome, "the arts that make a person free." When Europe recovered this tradition of knowledge, people gave that age a name drawn from light: Enlightenment, Lumières — the opening of darkness. To illuminate the obscured.

The word Illuminati shares the same light. From the Latin illuminare — to illuminate. Those who have been lit.

We place this word beside our name as a declaration of lineage. In an unpredictable, random world, what we need is not the power to see everything — but light enough to see what is at hand.
